‘A Hitchhiker’s Guide’ is about the disappearance of Mona Blades who went missing on Queen’s Birthday Weekend, 1975. She was hitchhiking from Hamilton to Napier and was last seen in an orange Datsun station wagon as it turned off the Napier/Taupo highway onto bleak and isolated Matea Road. As her attacker’s shadow looms large upon the road her soul leaves her body in the form of a jellyfish. Behind her more jellyfish, the Datsun and a huia, representing her extinction, swirl about a tornado creating an unearthly atmosphere as the rational world collapses in the moments before her death.
