Hotel Jug

One of Crown Lynn’s most enduring design was the simple straight-sided jug – shape number 715. Slipcast in at least six sizes, it first made an appearance in the late 1940’s or early 1950’s and continued in production until Crown Lynn closed down. Popular with institutions as well as ordinary households, the jugs dispensed milk and lumpy custard to boarding school students and hospital patients throughout New Zealand.

HISTORY

Hotel Jug Series

THREE SIZES – LOTS OF WARIATIONS WITH ATTRACTIVE TRANSFER DECORATIONS

There are five Jugs in our collection, imaginatively named Hotel Jug #1 – Hotel Jug #5.

This possibly comes from it being part of the Vitrified Hotel Ware Range (Vitrified is when the clay is fired to a temperature high enough to be waterproof – it has changed it’s molecular structure to be stone like).

This shape saw use in hospitals, NZ Government Departments, and commercial institutes throughout NZ for decades.

The form is a modernist shape that began to be seen during the Art Deco period in Europe, and variations are still manufactured today.

A photograph, in the Alexander Turnbull Library Collection, from 1948 shows several different size Jugs at a Trade Show display.

Well balance, comfortable to pour at any level of fluid, and pleasing to the eye- many reasons for it’s survival for decades ahead!
