These are part of the Forest and Fauna range that can be viewed on www.stepa.nz

As a natural continuation of the skills and spirit of Crown Lynn products, the Forest and Fauna range are natural companions to the original forms.

The Huia was a native bird or New Zealand Aotearoa, last seen in 1907. The feathers were highly prized by Iwi – the New Zealand Maori – worn as a symbol of Mana – prestige and status, they were kept in specially carved boxes and highly treasured.

The bird was hunted into extinction to supply the demand for these feathers as hat ornament in Europe.

Surviving examples of these feathers have reached enormous auction prices.

HISTORY

Huia Feather – Legacy Range

Introducing the Huia Feather Platter:

A Kiwi Treasure for Your Home.  Once a highly prized treasure, the Huia Feather holds a special place in New Zealand’s history. Worn by Iwi to symbolize Mana and Status.  These taonga (treasures) were stored in specially carved boxes, a testament to their significance.

A Piece of Kiwi Heritage In the days before European settlers arrived, the elusive Huia bird was already scarce.  It was found mainly on the East Coast of the North Island. Its tail feathers became sought-after hat ornaments overseas, adding a touch of New Zealand to far-off lands, at the cost of this bird’s extinction.

A Lasting Tribute Although the Huia bird has not been seen since 1907, its legacy lives on. Our Huia Feather Platter, adorned with the iconic black and white colors synonymous with New Zealand’s sporting and military representatives, is a proud addition to any home.

Versatile and Striking This platter is not just a beautiful piece of art; it’s also a practical serving dish that will elevate your kitchen. Whether it’s sitting gracefully on your bench or adorning your wall.   it’s a statement of elegance and heritage.

Options to Suit Your Style The Huia Feather comes in two striking matt glaze options—Ivory and Matt Black.  Both options are food-safe finishes that pay homage to New Zealand’s iconic colors. For a glossy touch, we offer a pristine white finish.

Crafted by Bruce Yallop Created by the skilled hands of Bruce Yallop for Studio Ceramics in 2003.  This was part of the NZ Forest and Fauna Series.  This Huia Feather Platter is a testament to Kiwi craftsmanship and creativity.
